Love of Learning

As I reflect on my last tutoring session, I am reminded of the innate curiosity and joy of  discovery in the young child.  In this particular instance, we were reading a passage about sugar gliders.  My 7 year old student could not wait to learn each new fact, and eagerly searched out  information.  As his enthusiasm soared, he excitedly groped for ways to put down his most recently acquired knowledge into words.  His writing was a delight to him, and a sense of achievement for me.

I was once again made aware of the natural desires in all of us to learn, grow, and  achieve.  Each year, my first graders come in hungry and thirsting for knowledge -- with questions and enthusiasm beyond measure!  As the year goes by, I must be careful not to squelch that hunger -- but move it ever so gently forward.
Testing comes, and the tediousness of practice evolves.  Necessary, yes!  But may I be up to the challenge to preserve the freshness and vitality of these little minds entrusted to me for this brief time.
